Will Modi attend upcoming SCO event in Pakistan?
This year, Pakistan is set to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of Government gathering in October, with an announcement made by the foreign office spokesperson on Thursday. The spokesperson confirmed that India, along with all other members, will be invited to participate in person in Islamabad. However, the speculation remains whether Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in attendance at the event in Pakistan.
Established in 2001 by China and Russia, the SCO is a significant Eurasian organization dedicated to addressing political, economic, international security, and defense issues. It stands as the largest regional organization globally in terms of geographical reach and population, covering approximately 80 percent of Eurasia and 40 percent of the world's population. Pakistan joined the SCO in June 2017 following its observer status from 2005 to 2017.
"The year 2024 marks a crucial period for Pakistan's relationship with the SCO, as it will be in the role of the rotating chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of Government," Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the spokesperson for the foreign office, stated during her weekly press conference. "In this capacity, Pakistan is set to host the SCO Heads of Government meeting in October this year," she added.
Baloch highlighted that the October conference will be followed by a ministerial meeting and numerous high-level discussions among SCO member states, focusing on areas such as financial, economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation. She stressed that the conference will strictly adhere to SCO protocols and ensure the participation of heads of government in person.
"In light of this, we, as the chair, will be extending invitations to all heads of government of SCO member states," Baloch said, expressing optimism that all members of the regional group will be represented at the conference, which is anticipated to concentrate on trade, investment, and economic integration.
